Mr. Kelly B. Graneau, is the current Minister of Carib Affairs of Dominica, and he represents one of the most outstanding figures among the indigenous people, the Carib Indians, in Dominica.
Kelly Graneau was born on the 16th of April, 1958, and for several years has been dedicated to serving both the people of his community and the island. Before becoming a member of the Carib Council in 1983, and Minister of Carib Affairs later in his career, he was a teacher at the Salibia Primary School. Mr. Graneau also served as Chairman of the Sineku Development Committee between the years 1981 to 1983. He then was appointed as Chairman of the Banana Farmers Association in which he played an active role in the development of the banana industry during the mid to late 80’s.
Through his involvement in this association, Mr. Graneau made an invaluable contribution to the nation, given the several challenges that the banana industry suffered over the years due to the lack of sufficient diversification schemes, competition from other international producers, lack of economic resources, and unfavorable international tax regimes and regulations.
His political career began in 1989, when he joined the North Eastern Association of the Dominica Association of Local Authorities, after which he was appointed Senator in the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) before he was made the Dominican Minister of Carib Affairs when he won his seat in the 2000 elections. From then on, he has been actively involved in the development of the Carib Indians in Dominica and overall in Dominica, which, over the past eight years, has been through very tough economic times.
Today, thanks to his relentless efforts, along with that of the late Prime Minister of Dominica, the Honorable Roosevelt Douglas, the Ministry of Carib Affairs was established in 2000. This Ministry of Carib Affairs in Dominica was founded on the basis of facilitating the improvement and development of the socioeconomic conditions of the residents of the Carib Territory and Atkinson. It is also actively involved in preserving the Carib culture and heritage through the development of various cultural projects, while facilitating the integration of the Caribs into the wider society, through the construction of schools, provision of health facilities, employment opportunities, and professional training.
Today, as an active member of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) (the present leading political party headed by the Honorable Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt) and Parliamentary Representative of the Carib village of Salibia, as the Minster of Carib Affairs, Mr. Graneau continues to contribute towards the development of Dominica in a very dynamic way through his desire to optimize Dominica’s ecotourism product by undertaking several projects that would strengthen and preserve the indigenous heritage of the island.
